irregular verbs

irregular verbs
An irregular verb has a past form or a past participle which is not formed by adding `-ed'.
\
A few irregular verbs have regular past forms, but two past participle forms, one of which is irregular. The commoner one is given first.
\
Some irregular verbs have two past forms and two past participle forms. If there is a regular form, it is given first in the following table, unless it is much less common than the irregular one.
\
With a few verbs, different forms are used for different meanings. For example, the past form and the past participle of the verb `hang' is `hung' for most of its meanings. However, `hanged' is used when it means `executed by hanging'. See entries at ↑ bid, ↑ hang, ↑ lay - lie, ↑ speed, ↑ weave, and wind.
\
The following table shows verbs which have irregular past forms and past participles.
\
Note that `gotten' is often used instead of `got' as the past participle of `get' in spoken American English. See entry at ↑ gotten.
